What is Feng Shui?

Pronunciation: fuhng shwey

While the literal translation is ‘wind and water’, Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese philosophy, developed more than 5000 years ago, which evolves around the ideal that we should all live in harmony with our environment; if we live our lives in balance, we create positive energy (ch’i) and attract good fortune.

Most of us are familiar with the Art of Feng Shui in relation to the practice of arranging furniture in a certain manner that ultimately stimulates and protects. It is deeply rooted in the Feng Shui beliefs that we are all affected, for better or worse, by our surroundings and the environments we create.

Understanding Ch’i

Pronunciation: chee
Ch’i refers to the life force or universal energy that controls our world. Similar to what North Americans call ‘karma’, in Asian culture positive ch’i brings about prosperity, good fortune, longevity and great happiness. Ch’i exists everywhere all around us. However, it is most powerful in certain situations and settings, making it an integral element of Feng Shui. Practitioners believe that by following the rules of Feng Shui, one can bring about lasting ch’i in their home and life.

For example, the proper décor and placement of furniture in a child’s bedroom is critical to achieve positive ch’i. The bedroom should be kept clear of clutter in the center of the room to promote freedom and expression, and the décor of the room itself must reflect the child’s need to develop and grow. Bright yellow is not recommended in a child’s bedroom as it causes sleep problems. Furniture pieces should be child size to promote confidence and power and not oversized, which makes a child feel small or intimidated in their own space. As well, placing a child’s bed underneath hanging shelves or beams is said to cause feelings of oppression.

Feng Shui and Clothing

Imagine this: Each time you look at a color, whether it is in a room or an article of clothing, your eyes perceive that color as a certain emotion, mood or energy. We have all heard that red is an unsettling color in a bedroom and darker tones of blue and green, when used together, are strong colors that invoke introspection and should be used with caution. Color influences our minds and our psyches, which ultimately affects our mood and our health. Therefore, it is important to understand that the decision to wear a certain color goes well beyond the visual aspect.

Around the world and in many different cultures, colors are associated with different meanings. Blue in China is linked to immortality. In Arab countries, blue is the color of protection. Each of us responds to color in very real and instinctive ways. Red is exciting and the universal color of passion. Pink is the color of love, comfort and protection but can also leave one feeling lethargic. Orange helps to reduce depression and sadness.

Thus it is natural that the practice of Feng Shui should extend into our clothing. Colors worn will evoke different feelings and energies.
